Mid-Term Goals

The mid-term goal of the proposed center is the development of the mathematical structures needed for the study of key phenomena in linguistics and neuroscience. More specifically, research will focus on the following directions.

Linguistics:

-To verify that chains with memory of variable length can be used to classify distinctive rhythmic patterns both in Brazilian and European Portuguese.
-To express the syntaxes of the Brazilian and European Portuguese in terms of context trees defined on a suitable alphabet of morpho-syntactic labels.
-To construct an annotated Corpus of spoken Portuguese.
-To enlarge the number of words and the annotation of the Tycho Brahe Corpus.

Neuroscience:

-To develop a system with many components and variable-range interactions suited to the description of neuronal data.
-To develop statistical methods for model selection in the class of chains and fields with interaction of variable range.
-To develop efficient and robust computational methods to perform the selection procedures developed by the project.

Mathematics and Computer Science:

-To establish a taxonomy of variable-range measures (processes and fields) and determine the applicability of the different types to model phenomena in linguistics and neuroscience.
-To study the use of approximation algorithms and convex programming to perform the statistical analysis of these models.
-To obtain efficient descriptions of the graphs retrieving linguistic dependencies and those describing interacting neurons or clusters of neurons.
